Sound travels through a room at an average speed of 340 m/s. Absorption, reflection and reverberation define whether a room is experienced as stressful or relaxing. Sound of voice mostly prefers a quick die out for a good intelligibility. Classical music for example prefers a long reverberation so that all tones mix beautifully. Every sound production has its own characteristics that define the need of specific acoustical measures.

Most rooms have fixed, predominantly hard and sound-reflecting surfaces. Curtains and carpets offer additional absorption properties. Usually absorption for low frequencies remains insufficient and for high frequencies is already available.
